A chief justice of India’s pet project, the Supreme Court Portal for Assistance in Court’s Efficiency (SUPACE) is a platform that provides judges with pertinent legislation and data.
At the portal’s launch, Chief Justice Bobde stated that although some people view artificial intelligence (AI) as a means of making decisions automatically, the Supreme Court’s system is simply intended to evaluate data and provide them to justices who are seeking input for a decision.
As the CJI put it, artificial intelligence is to intellect what muscle memory is to the mind.
“This is where we are going to stop using it – after it has given all the information and analysed all the examples,” Bobde said, adding “We are not going to let it spill over to decision making”.
About the Supreme Court Portal for Court Efficiency Assistance (SUPACE) Portal
- It is a tool that provides a judge with pertinent data and legal information.
- It’s an artificial intelligence (AI) platform meant to lighten the workload of judges by simplifying their research.
- It is not intended to make decisions; rather, its purpose is to process data and provide them to judges who are seeking their input.
- It is the ideal fusion of machine learning and human intelligence—”a hybrid system” that functions best when combined with human intelligence.
